History
Butia, is a Portuguese corruption of an aboriginal term meaning “spiny.” Capitata is Latin for “with a head,” an allusion to the shape of the leaf crown.
Pindo Palm is a solitary growing tree. These specimens are cold hardy as well as drought tolerant. These palm trees make notably attractive garden trees and may withstand poor soils as long as it is well drained. Butia capitata is identified by its stout, woody trunk and distinctive, blue-green palm fronds which arch distinctively towards the ground.
