CARDBOARD PALM

Scientific Name: Zamia furfuracea

 

Common Name: Cardboard Palm

 

Description: Relatively small in size, this charming cycad is tough enough to survive occasional neglect and harsh environments. The leaflets have a cardboard feel to them, hence the name Cardboard Palm. Males and females produce cones that break open to release bright red seeds. Zamia furfuracea is a low-growing, clumping cycad. It is advisable to plant cardboard palms in areas with good drainage and full sun.
 

Origin: Eastern Mexico, Veracruz
 

Climate: Cardboard palms grow well in coastal, tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions.
 

History: Furfuracea means “covered with loose wool or scales.”
